His Excellency General The Honourable David Hurley AC DSC
The Governor of New South Wales, His Excellency General the Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Retd.) is Patron of the NSW Branch.
General Hurley is a former Senior Officer in the Australian Army and the 38th and current Governor of New South Wales. General Hurley joined the Australian Army in January 1972 and graduated from the Royal Military College, Duntroon in December 1975 into the Royal Australian Infantry Corps. In 2014 he retired from military service after three years as Chief of the Australian Defence Force, and after a 40-year military career. General Hurley is a combat soldier who rose to the top of the defence force.
The General was the first of the present group of Defence leaders with recent operational experience, commanding a battalion group in Somalia in 1993. Those who came before him, such as Governor-General, the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC, served in Vietnam. General Hurley was also first of the present Senior Leaders to hold three important positions – Vice Chief of the Defence, Chief of Joint Operations, and Chief of Capability Defence.
