Previous events

The Branch has undertaken the giving of scholarships, bursaries, youth community service awards and medallions to many young people in NSW.

Youth Community Service Awards

Beginning in 1993, the Youth Community Service Awards (a medallion and certificate of commendation) are presented to twenty Y11/12 students each year (under the Convenorship of Dr John Lincoln AM); through the Young Endeavour Training Scheme a medallion of excellence is presented to the outstanding trainee on each of the 24 training courses each year.

A scholarship is also given to a young person who would not otherwise be able to afford a berth. In 2003/2004 this money was used by that person to sail overseas. This project was initiated by RADM Rothesay Swan AO and has had his continuing support.

Music

In 1997 a joint function was held with the Australian Institute of Music, which helped both the Association and the Institute; recitals have been held most years since then.

Asia-Pacific Jamboree

Financial assistance was given in 2000 for two scouts to attend the 22nd Asia-Pacific Jamboree at Cataract Scout Park and to the Girl Guides for a gathering in October 2004. A Certificate of Merit acknowledging our contribution hangs in the National Office, Old Parliament House, Canberra.

Olympic Games

Many members take part in the Olympic Games every four years and support events in other years.

Paralympics

In 1999, prior to the Paralympics, a gift of $3000 was given to the NSW Wheelchair Sports Association for the purchase of a wheelchair for the Sydney 2000 games.

Childrens medical treatment

In 2004, a contribution was made to the McDonald Challenge (previously the City of Sydney Eisteddfod) for a drama prize and to the Far West Children's Association to enable a child to have medical treatment in Sydney.

Photographic archives

The NSW Branch now has excellent photographic archives, while paper archives are growing. Newsletters, in typewritten copy from 1982 to 1997, has been bound; the colour format designed in that year will be bound in due course. The Branch Minutes from 1980 to 2008 have also been bound.

Other major projects

Australia My Vision. Quest - Awards Dinner, ParIt House, 24-11-1995. Awards presented by The Hon. R.J.Carr MP, Premier of NSW. The Premier is surrounded by the Finalists & supported by Cmdre Peter James AM (Chairman) & Prof Graham Swain AM (NSW Convenor).

There have been other major projects in which the Branch has been heavily involved - run in partnership with the National Association. The 'Australia - My Vision' cultural competition, the Media and Book Awards in the early 1990s and the poetry competition in the 1980s.

These latter projects involved an enormous amount of work for the Branch Committee and proved to be outside the scope of a voluntary organization. An ongoing combined project is that of the Association Honour Boards which can be erected by local councils, schools and other organizations to honour recipients in their jurisdiction.

The Order Honoured

On 7th September 1986 the Dedication of the Northern Doors at St Andrew's Cathedral took place, honouring the Order of Australia and, on 31st January 1988, the Dedication of the Banner of the Order of Australia.

Dedication of the Association Banner

In September 1990, the Dedication of the Association Banner took place at St Mary-le-Bow Church in London. This will hang permanently in this historic church of Bow Bells where Australia's first Governor, Captain Arthur Phillip, was baptised. Present was the Australian High Commissioner, Mr Douglas McClelland AC and Members of the Association from Victoria, South Australia and New South Wales, as well as Dame Leonie Kramer AC and the National Treasurer.
